Advice for a career in art and comics!

Posted by Eudaemon - 4 days ago

Hello everybody!

Eudaemon here.

I’ve finally decided to officially upload my art to the internet! So I’m calling out to everyone for advice and tips for how I should manage stuff with managing myself creatively on the internet, now and in the future. Some things I’d love some help with is:

1) How do I prevent my work being stolen?

2) Tips for monetising my work in the future?

3) Tips for illustrating comics and publishing them?

4) Idea generation advice?

5) What art should and shouldn’t be published? (E.g. Outside of work for comics to express myself creatively I’m aiming to stay SFW)

For some context I’ve done art for about a year and a half now. I’m pretty good for a teenage male / young adult male but I still am improving. For example, as of recently, only now am I starting to use my fine tips markers again and my alcohol markers. I do my work in my sketchbook and I take a lot of inspiration from Manga, but I’d say Dragon Ball is my main inspiration. I’d love to do the cell shading / alcohol marker art you see on Manga covers for my comics. My writing style is heavily inspired by Manga story formatting such as Dragon Ball Z and Chainsaw Man, but my stories are also inspired by the work of Goichi Suda, Hideo Kojima, Tatsuki Fujimoto, Akita Toriyama and their mature, insane yet complex and beautiful storylines. I love drawing contemporary, super powered and monster outs characters. I hope this gives you some context for my work. I have some of my older art compiled on my profile, but it’s not meant to be particularly good.

Thanks,

Eudaemon

Hi! Welcome to NG

First question: there isn't much you can do about your work being stolen. You can watermark it, but that won't stop persistent thieves. That's just the nature of the internet. Don't worry, those people will normally be called out. Fifth question, you should consider making a thread to post all of your art in. You can upload whatever art you want there, including work you don't think belongs in the portal. Questions 2 - 4 can be answered by more experienced artists on the forums. Use the search function to see if they were already answered.

Use this thread to help with improvement. Use the art thread you make to ask for feedback.

Here's a regular site that will get namedropped for artists asking about fundamentals (which I beg you not to skip. Future you will be very grateful). Click lessons and work your way down.

For drawing ideas and references, try Pinterest. That site is a lifesaver. ALWAYS use refs.

Try getting a manga you like and copy what you see. You'll get an idea of what the mangaka was thinking as you try to recreate a panel. It will show in your own work.

For someone who hasn't been drawing for very long, your art is pretty descent. It'll be fun watching you slowly get better. Remember not to push yourself too hard on your journey. Good luck on your exams :)

OMG I love Pinterest! I have like 7.5k pins and I haven't even had it for half a year. It's crazy good! With the manga I try to copy CSM's hair and DBZ's physiques, so yeah, I'll try and recreate more panels. Thank you so much, it means a lot and I put a lot of hard work into creative expression! It is one of the lights of my life. Thank you again! After that, it's just gaming and art for like a month which is pretty epic ngl
